2、eresolved.Onesourceofconflictsisthedesiretomaintainculturalidentity.CanConfucianismcontributetotheworkingoutofauniversalglobaljusticethatcanhelpresolveconflicts,particularlyconflictsofculturalidentities?Canitbepartoftheglobalisationprocesswithoutsacrificingitsculturalidentit
3、y?Iarguethatitcanonbothcountsandthusitisneitheravillainblockingtheprogressofuniversaljustice,anecessaryconditionforconflict-freeglobalisation,norahelplessvictimofthatprogress.Thepaceofglobalisationhasquickenedconsiderablyinthelast10–15years,owinginparttochangingeconomican
4、dpoliticalforces,andinparttorecentadvancesincomputerandinformationtechnologies.Theprocessofglobalisationhascertainlyyieldedconsiderablebenefits,butithasalsoresultedinconflicts,someofwhichtaketheformofviolentprotestsatinternationalmeetings.Protesters,naturally,drawattention
5、towhattheytaketobethehighcostsofglobalisation.Observersgenerallyagreethattheforcesandtechnologiesthathavebroughtabouttheglobalisationprocessaresuchthataslowdown,letalonereversal,isruledout.Ifthisistrue,itmakesnosensetryingtoslowdowntheprocess,andworsesensetostopit.Whethe
6、rornotthisistrue,themoresensiblethingtodoistoensurethatthebenefitscanbeenhancedandenjoyedbyasmanypeopleaspossible,andthecostsminimised.Onedistinctfeatureofglobalisationisthemovetowardsuniversalism:theworldisincreasinglymovingtowardsuniversaltechnicalformatsandlanguages,un
7、iversalprocedures,universalrulesandregulations.Forsupportersofglobalisation,theultimateprizetobehadisuniversalglobaljustice,administeredinthecontextofauniversalculture.Yet,whilethebenefitsofadoptinguniversalformats,proceduresandthelikeareclearenough,andthecostsarefew,ther
