3、diniumdominans,fedanalga(Dunaliellatertiolecta)deficientinbotheicosapentaenoicacid(EPA)anddocosahexaenoicacid(DHA).D.tertiolectawasrapidlyingestedandconsumedbytheheterotrophicprotists.Growthratesrangedfrom0.77to0.82and0.78to0.92d–1inO.marinaandG.dominans,respectively.LCn-3EFAproductioninth
4、e2heterotrophicprotistsreachedthehighestlevelsatthehighestprotistcelldensityinthefeedingexperiments,equivalenttoaproductionof1.9±0.3µgEPAand22.3±6.4µgDHAbyO.marinaand4.7±0.5µgEPAand16.5±1.1µgDHAbyG.dominanspermgalgalcarboncon-sumed.BothprotistscontainedmuchhigherlevelsofDHA,anutrientcritic
5、alforneuralandvisualdevelopmentformarineorganismsathighertrophiclevels,comparedtothegoodfoodqualityalgaRhodomonassalina.ThissuggeststhattheLCn-3EFAcontributionbyheterotrophicprotiststothepelagicfoodwebsisquantitativelysignificantandmaybecrucialfortheproductionandrecruitmentofspeciesathighe
