2、ations,andthenumberofdeathsfromtrafficaccidents,1953to1963,increasedasshowninFigures1and2.However,thedeathrateper100millionvehiclemilesdecreasedsubstantiallyduringthistenyearperiod.Althoughsuccessfulstepshavebeentakentoreducemotorvehicleaccidents,thehighwayengineeristh
3、efirsttoadmitthatthereisroomformuchimprovement.TheJointHighwayResearchProjectin1964initiatedatrafficengineeringdemonstrationprojectontheU.S.52BypassatLafayette-WestLafayette,Indiana.Oneofthefirstphasesofthisstudywasastudyindepthofthetrafficaccidentswhichoccurredonthisf
4、acilitytodeveloprecommendationsfortrafficengineeringimprovementswhichwouldreduceaccidentsonthisfacilityandinformationofvalueonotherhighvolumeurbanhighways.TheLafayette-WestLafayetteBypasswasthesceneof834accidentsbetweenJanuary1,1961,andDecember31,1963.Atotalof374injuri
5、esandtendeathsresultedfromtheseaccidents.Thesearetheaccidentswhichwereinvestigatedinthisstudy.THESTUDYLOCATIONThecombinedpopulationofLafayetteandWestLafayetteisapproximately55,000.Thisdoesnotincludeapproximately15,000ofthePurdueUniversitystudentswholiveoutsidethecityli
