2、,UniversityofRhodeIsland,Narragansett,RhodeIslandAbstract.Itispresentlyuncleartowhatextentcoastalandoceanicchromophoricdissolvedorganicmatter(CDOM)isremnantofdilutedinputsfromtheterrestrialbiosphere,istheproductofinsitubiologicalprocesses,orisaderivativeofbothsources.Thedevelopmentofapersistentph
3、ytoplanktonthinlayer(2-4mthick)inEastSound,Washington,providedanopportunitytostudythelinkbetweenCDOMformationandinsituphytoplanktonproduction.SpectralCDOMabsorptionaa(h),spectralparticulateabsorptionap(X),andhydrographicparametersweresimultaneouslyrecordedinhigh-resolutionverticalprofiles.Signifi
4、cantfine-scalevariabilitywasobservedinaa(412).Themajorityofthisfinestructurecovariedwithsalinity,consistentwithmixingbetweenanoceanicendmemberwatertype(lowCDOM,highsalinity)andariverineone(highCDOM,lowsalinity).Duringthedevelopmentofthethinlayer,deviationsfromthisaa(412)-salinityrelationshipwereo
5、bserved.Toisolateonlythechangesinaa(412)resultingfrominsituprocesses,theinitialstate,representedbytheaa(412)-salinityrelationship,wassubtractedfromthemeasuredaa(412).Theremaining"insituchange"orresidualaa(412)fractionwaslinearlycorrelatedwithoxygensupersaturationandap(440).Abovethephytoplanktonla
6、yercenteredat3-6mtheaaresidualwasnegative,suggestingremovalbyphotodegradation.ApositiveaaresidualwithinthethinlayeristhefirstdirectevidenceforrapidinsituCDOMproductionassociatedwithphytoplanktonprimaryproduction.Althoughtheinsitufractionwas10%orlessofthetotalCDOMabsorptioninEastSoundduringthisper
7、iod,intheopenoceanthisfractionmaycomprisenearlyalloftheabsorptionbydissolvedmaterials.1.IntroductionabsorptionofbluelightbyCDOMoverlapsthephytoplanktonabsorptionpeaknear440nm,resultinginacompetitionbe-Lightenteringtheo
