3、lterappliesonlytoNPs.TheapparentinstancesofclausesinCasepositionsactuallyinvolvenominalphrasesandCaseisassignedtothedominatingnominalphraseinsteadoftheclause.Thisissupportedbythefactthatsuchclausesdonotallowextractionfromwithin(complexNPconstraint).Furthers
4、upportforthisanalysiscomesfromanumberofimportantfactsnotnotedbefore,whichdistinguishesclausesinthepositionsalternatingwithnominalexpressions(CANP)andthosenotalternatingwithnominalexpressions(non-CANP).First,onlyCANPcanbeconjoinedbythenominalconjunctionwordh
5、e/genandtheconjoinedCANPscanco-occurwithdou,whoseappearancesignalsplurality.Secondly,onlyCANPcanbefollowedbyanovertnoun(phrase),suchas‘(the)matter/question/saying”andonlyCANPcanhavenominalinterpretations.Thirdly,non-CANP,suchastheobjectsofverbsrenwei/cai‘th
