4、values.Participantsconsistentlyreportedtheimportanceofspendingmanagementtools.Collegegraduates'debtlevelshaveincreasedsignificantlyoverthepastdecade.Thesehigherdebtlevelshavesignificantsocietalimplicationsasrecentdebtburdenedcollegegraduatesmayhavelessflexibilityinthety
5、pesofjobstheyareabletoaccept.Additionally,decisionsaboutmarriage,family,andhomepurchasemayalsobeeffected.Compoundingtheproblemofhighdebtlevelsislowfinancialliteracyandpoorfinancialmanagementamongsomecollegestudents.Muchoftheincreaseinstudentdebtlevelsistheresultofincrea
6、sedtuitioncostsoverthepastdecade.However,someoftheincreaseinstudentdebtlevelsmayalsoresultfromchangingspendingpatterns.In1991,31%ofrecentgraduatesreportedthattheywouldhaveborrowedlessiftheyhadtodoitagain;by2002thispercentagehadincreasedto54%.Oneimplicationofthesubstanti
7、alincreasefrom1991to2002istheideathatstudentswouldhaveallocatedtheirresources(i.e.,discretionaryexpendituresandtime)differentlyduringcollegeinordertoavoidtakingonstudentloandebthadtheybeenmoreawareoftheirspendingbehavior8andtheramificationsofthatbehavioronfuturedebtburd
