3、nadequatelythatonlythoseinclosetouchwiththetrendofAmericanliteratureknowwhatthepoetofto-dayiscontributingtoit.Itisstrictly,then,asareflectionofourownperiod,toshowwhatisbeingdonebythesuccessorsofourearlierpoets,whatnewinterpretationtheyaregivingtolife,whatnewbeautytheyhave
4、apprehended,whatnewarttheyhaveevolved,thatthislittlebookhastakenform.Afewofthepoetsincludedhavebeenwritingforaquarterofacentury,andwere,therefore,amongtheimmediatesuccessorsoftheNewEnglandgroup,butmanyhavedonetheirworkwithinthepastdecadeandthevolumeasawholerepresentsthetw
5、entieth-centuryspirit.Fromtheschemeofthebook,thatofasmall,intimatecollection,representativeratherthanexhaustive,ithasbeenimpossibletoincludeallofthepoetswhowouldnaturallybeincludedinamoreambitiousanthology.Incertaininstances,also,mattersofcopyrighthavedeterredmefrominclud
6、ingthosewhomIhadoriginallyintendedtorepresent,butwithisolatedexceptionsthelittlebookcoverstheworkofourlaterpoetsandgivesahintofwhattheyaredoing.Ihaveattempted,asfaraspossible,tounifythecollectionbyarrangingthepoemssothateachshouldsetthekeynotetothenext,oratleastbearsomere
