2、ofillocutionarypointandperlocutionaryforce.Afteracriticalreviewofthepreviousstudiesconcerningthespeechactofcommissives,aswellastheriseandinfluenceofcorpuslinguisticsinthefieldoflinguisticresearch,thisthesispresentsacorpus-basedschemeofthestudy.Itgoesontoadoptthefourcategorieso
3、f"NeutralProsody,PositiveProsody,NegativeProsody,andMixedProsody^andfoursub-categoriesofprosodicmeaningsinordertoclassifyandanalyzethesemanticprosodiesrevealedbytheconcordancesofmajorcommissiveverbs,andthustojudgethebehaviorsofthemajorcommissiveverbsandthecharacteristicsofthes
4、peechactofcommissives.ThefivemajorEnglishcommissivewordsofpromise,guarantee,pledge,assure,andswear,andthefivemajorChinesecommissivewordsof承诺、答应、保证》发誓.and许诺&巳chosentobestudiedonthebasisoftheEnglishcorpusofBNC(BritishNationalCorpus)andtheChinesecorpusofCCLonline(corpusestablishe
5、dbyCenterforChineseLinguisticsofPKU).Foreachcommissiveverb,about100concordanceshavebeenextractedfromthecorpusandgroupedwithinthecategorizingframework・Andtheconcordancesinthemostimportantsemanticprosodycategoriesfortheverbhavebeenanalyzedindetailfromtheperspectivesofcollocation
6、alprofile,colligationalanddiscoursepatterns,semanticpreferenceandsemanticprosody.Anditisfoundthat,thecommissiveverbsoftenshowclearsemanticprosodieswhichrevealboththepromisors9andthepromiseesattitudetowardandcommentsontheevents.ComparisonsoftheEnglishandtheChinesecommissiveverb
