2、ndtheformingmechanismof“onionrings”arecomplicatedandcurrentlynotfullyunderstood.InthepresentFSWstudyaluminiumalloys5083andA356,withthelattermorereadilyweldedthantheformer,wereused.Theexperimentswereconductedtoobtainsamplesoftoolandworkpiece“frozen”togetherduringFSWforanal

3、ysis.Twodepositionmodesforformingtheweldnuggetzonewereobserved,oneforeachalloywiththepresentFSWparameters.Thefirstisthedepositionofshearlayersformingthe“onionrings”in5083alloynugget.Thetool-workpieceinteractionleadingtothelayerthicknessbeingequaltotheratioofweldingspeedan

4、dtoolrotationspeedissuggested.ThesecondmodeisthecombinationofdepositingtherotationalshearmaterialinthelowerpartontheadvancingsideandthedragflowofmaterialfromtheretreatingsiteformingtherestoftheA356nugget.Thelattermoderesultedintheabsenceofaclearringstructure.Keywords:fric
