1、PreaspirationinWesternYugurmonosyllablesMartiRoos1IntroductionWestemYugur,orYellowUygur,isoneofthesmallerTurkiclanguages,spokenbysome4,500peoplelivingprimarilyinStni{nYugurAutonomousCounty,inGdnsilProvinceinthePeople'sRepublicofChina.TheWestemYugurpeoplearepartoft
2、heYugurnationality,oneofChina's56officiallyrecognizednationalities,consistingof10,569personsaccordingtothe1982census.WithintheYugurnationality,fourdifferentlanguagesarespoken:West-emYugur,aTurkiclanguage,EastemYugur,aMongoliclanguage,Tibet-an,andChinese.Chineseist
3、helanguageofconbactbetweenthedifferentlinguisticgroups,andfunctionsaswrittenmedium.WestemYugurisanon-writtenlanguage.WestemYugurcanbeclassifiedasbelongingtotheNorthEastemsub-groupofTurkiclanguagesonthebasisofthedevelopmentofCT*-d-and*-igli'g(featuringazaqh'foot'an
4、dsari'y'yellow').ItismostcloselyrelatedtoKhakas,Tuva,Tofalar,andYakut.Apparentlyforgeographicalreasons,WestemYugurhassometimesbeenconsideredadialectofModemUygur,togetherwithSalar.SalarandModernUygur,however,bothbelongtothe*ayakbranchofTurkiclanguages,SalartotheOgh
5、uzsubgroupandMod-ernUygurtotheChaghataysubgroup.ThefirsttoreportonthelanguageoftheWesternYugurweretheex-plorersPotanin(1893)andMannerheim(1911).ThefirstlinguisttovisittheYugurwasMalov;duringhisexpeditionsin1909-1911and1913-1915,hecollectedmaterialsonWestemYugur,ap
6、artofwhichwaspublishedinseveralarticlesbeforethepublicationofhisvocabularyandgrammaticalout-line(1957)andacollectionoftexts(1967).AshortsurveyoftheWestemYugurlanguagewascompiledbyThomsen(1959).Inthelate1950sseveralSino-RussianresearchexpeditionswereorganizedinGdns
