2、inethevariouswaysinwhichthecityhasbeenrepresentedoverthecourseofWong’scareer.Thedissertationwillexplorethecitythroughthechaptersofplaces,peopleandtime.Thefirstchapterwillarguethatthecityisoftenportrayedasacharacteritself,consistentlydefiningitsinhabitantsan

3、ddrivingthenarrativeforward.Inaddition,thechapterwillarguethatthecreativeportrayalofthespacesofHongKongisintendedtoemphasisethesymbolicallyunstablenatureofthecity.ThesecondchapterwillarguethatWong’scharactersareinflictedbythisinstabilityandthatthefictionalc

4、ity’sinhabitantshavebecomemanifestationsofapostmoderndesiretoclingtoafragmentingsenseofhistoryandidentity.ChapterthreewilldiscusstheideathattimeasathemeisabindinglinkbetweenWong’sfilms,arguingthatheconsistentlyusesthecityofHongKongtoexplorethenatureoftimean

5、dmemory.ThedissertationwillthenconcludethatthecityofHongKong,asacontinuouslyandrapidlyevolvingspace,hasbeenadoptedbyWongKar-waitoexplorethenatureofmemoryinapostmodernworld,thusrepresentingthecityitselfasapostmodernspacethatisforeverphysicallyandsymbolically
