2、eUniversityinApril,2004.Duringhisvisit,Ihadtheopportunitytoaskforhisviews(astheChinesewouldsay,qingjiao)onvariousissuesrelatedtoChinesehistory1andhistoriography.Wehadmutuallyagreedthatthiswasnottobeaformalinterviewbutratheraseriesof“chats.”Ourconversation,however,didtouchupo
3、nawidearrayoftopics:historyandliterature,narrativeandtheory,socialhistoryanddailylife,traditionandmodernity,thepolicyimplicationsofhistoricalwritinganditsimpactonpopularknowledge,ChinesehistoriansintheU.S.,thefutureofChina,andsoon.Althoughmostofthequestionsaskedreflectedmyow
4、ninterests,ProfessorSpence’sinsightsonthesubjectsdiscussednodoubtwillbeofbenefittoabroadspectrumofChinascholarsandhistorians.Inwhatisarareachievementforahistorian,JonathanSpencehasattainedaneminentstatusinacademiawhileenjoyinggreatpopularityamongtheeducatedgeneralpublic.This
