2、beingswouldhaveaninherenttendencytoclimbaladderofprogression.CharlesDarwindisagreedonthisnotion.Ratherthanhavinganintrinsictendencyforprogression,theprocessesofmutationandselectionleadtoorganismsthatarewelladaptedtotheirenvironment.Todayevolutionarybiologistsareawareofthefactthatbacteriaare

3、notlesssuccessfulintheirenvironmentthane.g.humans,noraretheylesswelladapted.However,withoutdoubtsomeorganismsaremorecomplexthanothers.Again,thereisneitheranytheoreticalreasontoexpect,noranytrueempiricalevidence,thatevolutionarylineagesincreaseincomplexity.Yetsometaxaaremorecomplexthanothers

5、rtransition?ComplexityasinformationAssaidabove,anincreaseincomplexityisnotauniversalorinevitableevolutionarytrendinalltaxa.Sometaxamayevenshowdecreasingcomplexityifsuchreductionleadstoadaptationtotheirenvironment,atrendthatisoftenobservedinparasites.However,theprevailingimpressionisthatline

6、ageshaveincreasedincomplexity.Thisraisesthequestionhowtomeasurecomplexity.Forsure,thistaskhasnotbeenconvincinglysolvedasyet,butonewaytodealwiththeproblemistofocusonbiologicalinformation.SinceinformationisstoredasDNAinmostorganisms,theamountofDNAmayserveasanestimatorofthedegreeofcomplexity(T
