4、creeds;butIdonotthinkthatthatisthepropersenseoftheword,ifonlybecauseitwouldimplythatallthepeoplewhoarenotChristians--alltheBuddhists,Confucians,Mohammedans,andsoon--arenottryingtoliveagoodlife.IdonotmeanbyaChristiananypersonwhotriestolivedecentlyaccordingtohislights.Ithinkthatyoumusthaveacertai
5、namountofdefinitebeliefbeforeyouhavearighttocallyourselfaChristian.Theworddoesnothavequitesuchafull-bloodedmeaningnowasithadinthetimesofSt.AugustineandSt.ThomasAquinas.Inthosedays,ifamansaidthathewasaChristianitwasknownwhathemeant.Youacceptedawholecollectionofcreedswhichweresetoutwithgreatpreci
6、sion,andeverysinglesyllableofthosecreedsyoubelievedwiththewholestrengthofyourconvictions.13WhatisaChristian?Nowadaysitisnotquitethat.WehavetobealittlemorevagueinourmeaningofChristianity.Ithink,however,thattherearetwodifferentitemswhicharequiteessentialtoanyonecallinghimselfaChristian.Thefirstis
7、oneofadogmaticnature--namely,thatyoumustbelieveinGodandimmortality.Ifyoudonotbelieveinthosetwothings,IdonotthinkthatyoucanproperlycallyourselfaChristian.Then,furtherthanthat,asthenameimplies,youmusthavesomekindofbeliefaboutChrist.
