3、live.Humanactivitiescanreleasesubstancesintotheair,someofwhichcancauseproblemsforhumans,plants,andanimals.Thereareseveralmaintypesofpollutionandwell-knowneffectsofpollution.Theseincludesmog,acidrain,thegreenhouseeffect,and"holes"intheozonelayer.Eachofthesep
4、roblemshasseriousimplicationsforourhealthaswellasforthewholeenvironment.OutdoorAirPollutionOnetypeofairpollutionisthereleaseofparticlesintotheairfromburningfuelforenergy.Dieselsmokeisagoodexampleofthisparticulatematter.Someauthoritiesbelievethateventheburni
5、ngofwoodandcharcoalinfireplacesandbarbequescanreleasesignificantquanititesofsootintotheair.Anothertypeofpollutionisthereleaseofnoxiousgases,suchassulfurdioxide,carbonmonoxide,nitrogenoxides,andchemicalvapors.Thesecantakepartinfurtherchemicalreactionsoncethe
6、yareintheatmosphere,formingsmogandacidrain.Smogisatypeoflarge-scaleoutdoorpollution.Itiscausedbychemicalreactionsbetweenpollutantsderivedfromdifferentsources,primarilyautomobileexhaustandindustrialemissions.Citiesareoftencentersofthesetypesofactivities,andm
7、anysufferfromtheeffectsofsmog,especiallyduringthewarmmonthsoftheyear.Anotherconsequenceofoutdoorairpollutionisacidrain.Whenapollutant,suchassulfuricacidcombineswithdropletsofwaterintheair,thewater(orsnow)canbecomeacidified.Theeffectsofacidrainontheenvironme
