2、ththeonlyguidelinebeingthattheywritethreetofourpagesdescribingamemorythatisimportanttothem.Iencouragetheirwritinginfirstperson,makingtheessayapersonalnarrative,butalsomakingthisessaymucheasierforthestudentstowrite.Imaginemydisappointmentwhenafterthefirstessaywascomple
3、tedandturnedinIfoundthemajorityofthegradestobelowCs,highDsbecausethestudentsinmyclasshavenoideahowtoorganize,form,orproofanessay.HighschoolEnglishclassesareobviouslyteachingsomethingotherthanessaywriting.WalkintoanyhighschoolEnglishclassroominthestateofTexas,andyouwil
4、lfindstudentsreadingclassicliterature.Homer’sTheOdyssey,Shakespeare’sRomeoandJuliet,orperhapsKingLear,Lee’sToKillaMockingbird,andSteinbeck’sTheGrapesofWrath,areamongafewofthenovelsthathighschoolEnglisheducatorsselectfortheirstudentstoread,study,andtestover.Ontopofteac
5、hingstudentstheclassics,highschoolteachershavetofocusuponpreparingtheirstudentstopasstherequiredstandardizedteststhatourstategovernmentdeemssoimportant,sotheyconcentrateonteachingyoungmenandwomenhowtosimplypassatest.Thismeansthattheyfocusonteachingnothowtowriteagoodso
6、lidorganizedessay,butonhowtowriteapersonalnarrativeoftwopageswithoutfocusingonhavingthemuseanytypeofwritingprocess.YetoncethestudentsleavetheirhighschoolenvironmenttheyfindthemselvesillpreparedtoenteraFreshmanCompositionclassroom,whichfocusessolelyonthewritingprocess.
