4、ionoftheSAMIIPSCclimatology.TheclouddetectionalgorithmusedtoidentifyPSCsfromPOAMIImeasurementsisdescribed.POAMIIPSCdataarealsoexaminedincompari-sonwithcoincidentlidarPSCobservations.Resultsfromthe1994to1996Antarcticfall/winter/springseasonsarepresentedandrelatedqualita
5、tivelytotheSAM!IPSCclimatology.ThefrequencyofPSCoccurrenceincreasesduringtheAntarcticwinter,reachingamaximumofabout71%ofallPOAMIImeasurementsinAugust.Thereisastronglongitudinalvariationinthecloudfrequency,whichiscloselyrelatedtolongitudi-naltemperaturepatterns.Abroadmi
6、nimuminPSCfrequencyiscenteredneartheinternationaldatelineandabroadmaximumiscenteredabout315øE,intheleeoftheAntarcticPeninsula,wherethePSCfrequencyisabouttwicethatneartheminimum.InMay,PSCsareobservedatanaveragealtitudeof24km,withthealtitudesmovingdownwardasthealtitudeof
