3、Europeanlanguageshadbeenstudiedasforeignlanguagesinschools.Theprincipalaimofforeignlanguageteachingatthattimewastohelplearnerstoacquireareadingknowledgeofthetargetlanguages.Tosatisfytherequirementsofgroupteachinginschools,Grammar-TranslationMethodwasdevisedanddeveloped.Forthenexts

4、coresofyears,Grammar-TranslationMethoddominatedtheforeignlanguageteaching.Althoughtherewereindividualendeavorstoreformtheforeignlanguageteachinginthoseyears,noneofthemwassuccessfulinshakingthepositionoftheGrammar-TranslationMethod.However,theyhelpedtopavethewayfortheReformMovement

5、.Then,inthesecondhalfofthe19thcentury,ascommunicationsamongtheEuropeancountriesbecamemoreandmorefrequent,peoplewerenotsatisfiedwithamerereadingknowledgeofforeignlanguages.Theywantedtobeabletotalkinaforeignlanguageandtheybecomemoreandmoreinterestedinreformingtheteachingmethods.Amov

6、ementofreformstartedallofasudden.Theprinciplesofthemovementweretheprimaryofspeech,andtheabsolutepriorityofanoralmethodologyintheclassroom.Morelanguageteachingandresearch(1906-1940)TheteachingofEnglishasasecond/foreignlanguageinBritainmadegreatprogressduringthisperiod.Itbecameanaut

7、onomousprofessionandproducedanumberofworld-famousscholars.DanieJoneswasthefirstonethathelpedtomakeaprofessiontheteachingofEnglishasasecond/foreignlanguageandbecamewell-knownintheworldbecauseofhisresearchontheprofession.Inthespringof1907,hebegantoofferlecturesonthephoneticsofFrench
