2、abilityofwaterresources,however,waterlossesduetoevaporationmaysignificantlyreducetheiroperationalefficiency.Studieshaveevaluatedtheefficacyofvarioustypesofchemicalorphysicalevaporationbarriersoftenonaqualitativebasis.Certaindesignandmaintenanceadvantagesareofferedbyself-assemblingmodularfloatingcoverse
3、speciallyforlargereservoirsurfaces.Evidencesuggeststhatevaporationsuppressionefficiencyofthesefloatingcoversisnotproportionaltothecoveredsurfacefraction.Capitalizingonrecentexperimentalresultscarriedoutonsmallvessels,weshowthatevaporationsuppressionefficiencyoffloatingcoversinmuchlargerreservoirs(3to5o
4、rderofmagnitudeinvolume)isproportionaltothesquarerootofopenarea.Thermaleffectsofevaporationfromopenandpartiallycoveredsurfacesonsurfacewatertemperatureareproportionaltoevaporationrateandthusprovideapotentialmeanforreal-timemonitoringofcoverperformance.Floatingcoversseemtosuppressevaporationmoreeffe
5、ctivelythanothersuspendedevaporationbarriers.Forafixedcoveredsurfacefraction,largerholessuppressevaporationmoreefficientlythanmanysmalleranddistributedopenings.Theconceptsandrelationshipsdevelopedinthisstudyprovidequantitativemeansforengineeringdesignandeconomicalevaluationofevaporativebarriersforwat
