4、ations:Theconceptofcivilsociety(CS)encompassesawiderangeoforganisations.Inabroadsense,itincludesallnon-marketandnon-stateorganisationsandstructuresinwhichpeopleorganisetopursuesharedobjectivesandideals.Inthedevelopmentfield,thereisatendencytothinkprimarilyintermsofnon-governmentalorganisa

5、tions(NGOs)whosemissionsareexplicitlyanduniquelydevelopmentalincharacter.However,civilsocietyalsoincludesfarmers’associations,professionalassociations,community-basedorganisations,environmentalgroups,independentresearchinstitutes,universities,faith-basedorganisations,labourunions,andtheno

6、n-profitmedia,aswellasothergroupsthatdonotengageindevelopmentwork.Thisbroaddefinitioniswidelyacceptedintheworldofdevelopmentpractitioners.CivilSocietyOrganisations(CSOs)operateatfourdifferentlevels:•Firstlevel:grassrootsorganisations/community-basedorganisations.Theyconsistofinformalgroup

7、ingsorad-hocorganisationsworkingintheimmediatelocalcontext.•Secondlevel:organisationslegallyregisteredwithappropriatedstatues,workingforthebenefitofthepopulationsorinservicedelivery,sometimesincollaborationwithgrass-rootsorganisations(e.g.NGOs,associations).•Thirdle
