3、makeuseofintheirpractice.Myfocusisontheunderstandingsandpracticesofthoseteacherswhowouldgenerallyberegardedbytheirpeersasexemplarylanguageteachingprofessionals.Weallrecognizethoseteacherswhenweworkwiththem.Butwhatdistinguishesthewaytheyunderstandandappr
4、oachtheirwork?IntryingtoanswerthisquestionIwillfocusontencoredimensionsoflanguageteachingexpertiseandpractice.Theyarenotinanyhierarchicalrelationshipandthereissomeoverlapamongthembuttheyhelplayoutsomeofthebasicterritoryandwillhopefullyhelpconceptualiset
5、henatureofcompetence,expertiseandprofessionalisminlanguageteaching.Butfirstawordofcaution.Thenatureofwhatwemeanbyeffectivenessinteachingisnotalwayseasytodefinebecauseconceptionsofgoodteachingdifferfromculturetoculture(Tsui2009).Insomeculturesagoodteache
6、risonewhocontrolsanddirectslearnersandwhomaintainsarespectfuldistancebetweentheteacherandthelearners.Learnersarethemoreorlesspassiverecipientsoftheteacher’sexpertise.Teachingisviewedasateacher-controlledanddirectedprocess.Inotherculturestheteachermaybev
7、iewedmoreasafacilitator.Theabilitytoformcloseinterpersonalrelationswithstudentsishighlyvaluedandthereisastrongemphasisonindividuallearnercreativityandindependentlearning.Studentsmayevenbeencouragedto1questionandchallengewhattheteachersays.Thesedifferent
