2、einthe17thcentury,andislargelyunknowninChinatoday,exceptamongasmallbutvocalgroupofpeopleadvocatingtherevivalofHanfuasaChinesenationalcostume.HistoryofHanfuAccordingtoChinesetradition,HanfucanbekeithtracedbacktotheYellowEmperor,agreatsagekingofancientChinawhomlegendsaysruledi

3、nthe27thcenturyBC.Hanfuitselfhasarecordedhistoryofmorethan3000years.ItwaswornbyHanChinesepeoplefromthesemi-legendaryXiaDynasty(c.21stcenturyBC-16thcenturyBC)allthewaytotheMingDynasty(1368-1644).ThetraditionaldressofmanyAsiancountrieshavebeeninfluencedbyHanfu,especiallythoseo

4、fJapanandKorea.HanfuwasregardedbyHanChineseasaveryimportantpartoftheirculture.ThewearingofappropriatestylesofHanfuwasanimportantpartofcourteousrefinedbehaviour.ConfuciusconsideredHanfuaveryimportantpartofChineseceremonyandritualandmanyofhisquotationscontainreferencestoHanfu.

5、ThedisappearanceofHanfuHanfudisappearedatthebeginningoftheQingDynasty(1644-1911).TheQingDynastywasfoundednotbyHanChinesewhoformtheoverwhelmingmajorityofthepopulationofChinaproper,butbytheManchus.TakingadvantageofthepoliticalinstabilityandfrequentpopularrebellionsconvulsingCh

6、ina,thehighlyorganizedmilitaryforcesoftheManchussweptintotheMingcapitalofBeijingin1644(whichitselfhadearlierfallentorebelforcesunderLiZicheng),andformedtheQingDynasty.TheManchusforesawthattheywouldhavegreatdifficultyrulingtheHanChinese,whooutnumberedthemvastlyandhadamoresoph

7、isticatedculture.SoonafterthetakeoverofChinaproper,theManchusforcedtheHanChinesementoadoptManchuhairstyle(thebraid)andManchu-styleclothing.(QipaoandTangzhuang)Therewasenormousresistancetothesepolicies,especiallyagainstthebraid,whichrequiredshavingtheentiretopfronthalfofthehe
