3、year-oldchildren.Insuchcases,theseolderrelativesmayfeelparticularstrainontheirfinances,healthandemotionalstatebecausetheyareolderandarenotexpectingtocareforchildrenatthistimeintheirlives. Anothercommonmultigenerationalstructureincludesahouseholderplushis/herownchildrenandhis
4、/herownparents.In2000,therewerenearly1.3millionofthesetypesoffamiliesintheUSinthesehouseholds,thehouseholdertypicallywasnotexpectingtobecaringfortheirolderrelativeandisstrainedbytheresponsibilityofprovidingforthefood,shelterandmedicalneedsoftheirolderrelativeinadditiontotheda
5、ilydemandsofrearingchildren. Multigenerationalfamiliescutacrossrace,ethnicityandsocioeconomicstatus.WhilethemajorityofmultigenerationalfamiliesinmainlandUS areLatinofamilies,Hawaiihasthehighestpercentageofsuchfamilies(8.2%).herefore,inalloftheUS,multigenerationalfamiliesarem
6、ostcommonlyAsian,followedbyLatino,thenAfricanAmericanfamilies. Thenumberofmultigenerationalfamiliesisexpectedtoincrease.Thisfamilystructureallowsfamiliestocometogethertofacethemanytrialsoflife,suchasraisingachild,caringforelders,singleparenthood,andhighcostoflivingandhousing
7、.Althoughthemultigenerationalfamilycreatesasafetynetworkamongitsgenerationstofacetheirobstaclesasawhole,thoseobstaclesstillabound.Multigenerationalfamiliesfaceobstaclesliketheinabilitytoplacethechildrenandtheelderlyonhealthinsurancepolicies,toobtainaffordablehousing,aswellas
