3、ingandAppliedSciences.ItwaswhilehewasstillatCambridgethathebegantotakeaninterestinthefledglingmotorindustry.HewenttoFrancewithhisfatherandonhisreturnboughthimselfacar,whichsoonmadeanameforhimselfwithRollsatthewheel.ItwasthefirstcareverseenatCambridge.BythetimeR
4、ollsgraduated,hewasprobablythemostskilfuldriverinthecountry.In1902,Rollshadgoneintobusinessforhimselfsellingmotorcarsandthefirm,knownasCSRollsCo.quicklybecamealeadingmotorcardistributor. Rolls,however,stillhadtwomajorambitions.Firsthewantedhisnametobeassociate
5、dwithcarsinthesamewayasChubb'swaswithsafesandSteinway'swaswithpianos.And,secondly,hewantedtofindaBritishcarasgoodorpreferablybetterthantheforeigncarshewasthenselling.ButheverynearlymissedhischancetoachieveboththeseaimsatoncebecausewhenHenryEdmunds,ashareholderi
6、nRoyceLtd,toldRollsaboutHenryRoyce'snew2cylindercar,Rollsassumedthatitwouldbeasnoisyandinefficientasalltheother2cylindercarsontheroad.Hewas,ofcourse,wrongandHenryEdmundspersuadedRollstomakethetripuptoManchestertoseethecar. Rolls,EdmundsandRoycemetattheMidlandH
7、otelinManchesterandthemeetingwasanimmediatesuccess.RollstriedthecarandbecameawholeheartedenthusiastandhesaidafterwardsthatRoyce"wasthemanIhavebeenlookingforyears".AnagreementwasquicklyreachedgivingRollsexclusivesalesrightsforallthecarsRoycecouldproduceandthetwo
