2、endshipsbasedonthissentiment.RussiaTherelationshipisconstructeddifferentlyindifferentcultures.InRussia,forexample,onetypicallyaccordsveryfewpeoplethestatusof"friend".Thesefriendships,however,makeupinintensitywhattheylackinnumber.Friendsareentitledtocalleachotherbytheirfir
3、stnamesalone,andtousediminutives.Anormofpolitebehaviourisaddressing"acquaintances"byfullfirstnamepluspatronymic.Thesecouldincluderelationshipswhichelsewherewouldbequalifiedasrealfriendships,suchasworkplacerelationshipsoflongstanding,neighborswithwhomonesharesanoccasionalm
4、ealandvisit,andsoon.Physicalcontactbetweenfriendswasexpected,andfriends,whetherornotofthesamesex,wouldembrace,sometimeskissandwalkinpublicwiththeirarmsaroundeachother,orarm-in-arm,orhand-in-hand.AsiaIntheMiddleEastandCentralAsia,malefriendships,whilelessrestrictedthaninRu
5、ssia,tendalsotobereservedandrespectableinnature.Theymayusenicknamesanddiminutiveformsoftheirfirstnames.ModernwestIntheWesternworld,intimatephysicalcontacthasbeensexualizedinthepublicmindoverthelastonehundredyearsandisconsideredalmosttabooinfriendship,especiallybetweentwom
6、ales.However,stylizedhuggingorkissingmaybeconsideredacceptable,dependingonthecontext(see,forexample,thekissthetrampgivesthekidinTheKid).InSpainandotherMediterraneancountries,menmayembraceeachotherinpublicandkisseachotheronthecheek.Thisisnotlimitedsolelytooldergenerationsb
