4、eatthesamerateas2006,whenbothrosebymorethan30percent.Theoverallstronggrowth,however,masksmuchofwhatisgoingoninahighlydynamicmarket,themostsignificantdevelopmentbeingtheriseofdomesticcarmaking.Companiescontinuetocompetefiercelyonprice,althoughthismaychangeastheinflationarypressurescurre
5、ntlyimpactingtheeconomybecomeincreasinglyapparent.NelsonFungWithannualpassengercarsalesofjustunder4millionlastyear,andabove5millionthisyear,theindustryisstillfarfrommature.Indeed,thismakesitsachievementsallthemoreremarkable.In1990,only42,000carsweremadeinChina.1Anditwasonlyin1994thatth
6、egovernmentdesignatedtheautomotiveindustrya“pillar”industryofthenationaleconomy.Foreigninvestment,whichhadbeenpresentsincethelate1980s,wasfurtherencouraged,particularlyfromGermany’sVolkswagenandthentheUS’sGeneralMotors,whichresultedby2005inoutputandsalesbeingdominatedbysomedozenorsofor
