2、ndemiconincomeandpovertytoinformthetargetingofresourcestothosemostaffectedandassessthesuccessofcurrentefforts.WeconstructnewmeasuresoftheincomedistributionandpovertywithalagofonlyafewweeksusinghighfrequencydatafromtheBasicMonthlyCurrentPopulationSurvey(CPS),whichc
3、ollectsincomeinformationforalarge,representativesampleofU.S.families.Becausethefamilyincomedataforthisprojectarerarelyused,wevalidatethistimelymeasureofincomebycomparinghistoricalestimatesthatrelyonthesedatatoestimatesfromdataonincomeandconsumptionthathavebeenused
4、muchmorebroadly.Ourresultsindicatethatatthestartofthepandemicgovernmentpolicyeffectivelycountereditseffectsonincomes,leadingpovertytofallandlowpercentilesofincometoriseacrossarangeofdemographicgroupsandgeographies.SimulationsthatrelyonthedetailedCPSdataandinaggreg
5、atecloselymatchtotalpaymentsmadeshowthattheentiredeclineinpovertythatwefindcanbeaccountedforbytheriseingovernmentassistanceincludingunemploymentinsurancebenefitsandtheEconomicImpactPayments.ThispaperwaspreparedfortheBrookingsPapersonEconomicActivityconferenceonJun
