4、asinglefight).TheseKinetoscopearcadesweremodeledonphonographparlors,whichhadprovensuccessfulforEdisonseveralyearsearlier.Inthephonographparlors,customerslistenedtorecordingsthroughindividualeartubes,movingfromonemachinetothenexttoheardifferentrecordedspeeches
5、orpiecesofmusic.TheKinetoscopeparlorsfunctionedinasimilarway.EdisonwasmoreinterestedinthesaleofKinetoscopes(forroughly$1,000apiece)totheseparlorsthaninthefilmsthatwouldberuninthem(whichcostapproximately$10to$15each).Herefused12todevelopprojectiontechnology,re
6、asoningthatifhemadeandsoldprojectors,thenexhibitorswouldpurchaseonlyonemachine-aprojector-fromhiminsteadofseveral.Exhibitors,however,wantedtomaximizetheirprofits,whichtheycoulddomorereadilybyprojectingahandfuloffilmstohundredsofcustomersatatime(ratherthanonea
7、tatime)andbycharging25to50centsadmission.AboutayearaftertheopeningofthefirstKinetoscopeparlorin1894,showmensuchasLouisandAugusteLumiere,ThomasArmatandCharlesFrancisJenkins,andOrvilleandWoodvilleLatham(withtheassistanceofEdison'sformerassistant,WilliamDickson)
