2、etradehasgrownsignificantlyanditsstructurehasexperiencedmajorchanges.Suchchangesareshapingthecurrentcompetitivescenarioofthewinemarketandarethebaseelementsforitsfuturedevelopment.Thepaperanalysesthegrowthofworldwineimports,consideringallwinestogetherandthesinglecategoriesrecognizedby
3、globalstatistics(bottled,bulkandsparklingwine).Itthendescribesthechangesinthegeographyofimporterswiththeemergeneeofnewmarketsandthecompetitiveperformanceofthemainsuppliers.Thebulkwinetrade,there-exportofwineandtheexposureoftradeflowstotradebarriersarealsoanalyzedindetail.Finally,onth
4、ebasisofthedominanttrendinwineconsumptionandchangesinthesupplychain,thecriticalissuesarisingfromanalysisareexamined,withtheneedforfurtherresearchbeingunderlined.IntroductionWinehastraditionallybeenatradedgoodbutonlyinthepasttwodecades,theinternationalwinetradehasexperiencedconsiderab
5、legrowth:inthe1960stheexportedshareofglobalwineproductionwas10%andin1990thissharehadreachedonly15%.However,bytheyear2000theexportedproductionhadreached25%ofglobalproductionandmorethan30%in2010.Thegrowthoftheinternationalwinetradeisjustoneoftheaspectsofthecomplexevolutionoftheworldwin
6、esector:therehavebeenprofoundchangesinthegeographyofproductionandconsumptionandinthedirectionofexportflows(AndersonandNelgen,2011比BanksandOverton,2010andMarianietal.,2011).Indeed,thegrowthofthewinetradewascausedduringthe1990sbythewineconsumptionincreaseinNorthernEuropeandNorthAmerica
7、,compensatingforthedecreaseinconsumptioninMediterraneancountries,andbythegrowthofexportsfromso-calledNewWorldWineProducers.Recently,theinternationaltradeinwinehasbeenboostedbyincreasingdemandmainlyinAsiancountrieswhichuntilrecentlywereonlymarginallyinvolvedinwineimports,andproduction
