3、nandcommunications.TheShrinkingPLCWhenthePLCwasfirstintroduced,itssizewasamajorimprovement-relativetothehundredsofhard-wiredrelaysandtimersitreplaced.AtypicalunithousingaCPUandI/Owasroughlythesizeofa19televisionset.Throughthe1980sandearly1990s,modularPLCscontinuedtoshri
4、nkinfootprintwhileincreasingincapabilitiesandperformance(seeDiagram1fortypicalmodularPLCconfiguration).Inrecentyears,smallerPLCshavebeenintroducedinthenanoandmicroclassesthatofferfeaturespreviouslyfoundonlyinlargerPLCs.ThishasmadespecifyingalargerPLCjustforadditionalfea
5、turesorperformance,andnotincreasedI/Ocount,unnecessary,aseventhoseinthenanoclassarecapableofEthernetcommunication,motioncontrol,on-boardPIDwithautotune,remoteconnectivityandmore.PLCsarealsonowwell-equippedtoreplacestand-aloneprocesscontrollersinmanyapplications,duetothe
6、irabilitytoperformfunctionsofmotioncontrol,dataacquisition,RTU(remotetelemetryunit)andevensomeintegratedHMI(humanmachineinterface)functions.Previously,thesefunctionsoftenrequiredtheirownpurpose-builtcontrollersandsoftware,plusaseparatePLCforthediscretecontrolandinterloc
7、king.TheGreatCommunicatorPossiblythemostsignificantchangeinrecentyearsliesinthecommunicationsarena.Inthe1970sModiconintroductionofModbuscommunicationsprotocolallowedPLCstocommunicateoverstandardcabling.ThistranslatestoanabilitytoplacePLCsincloserproximitytorealworlddevi
