4、ilkinsonwritesin"ChineseHistory"thattheChineseusedcowryshellsasmoneybecauseofthevalueattachedtotheseobjectsastheywere"connectedtofertilityritesorbeliefs."HenryC.Koerperexplainsthisconnectioninhispaper,"CowryShells:Fertility/FecunditySymbolsinSouthernCalfiorniaIconography,"whichexplai
5、nsthatthecowryshellsymbolizedfertilitybecauseofitslikelinesstothefemalevulva.DuringtheZhoudynasty,cowryshellswerecastinbronzeandiron.Metalcowryshellswerestrungondoublestrandstobecounted.FromthefifthtothethirdcenturiesB.C.,coinsweremadeinbronzetomodelafterspadesandknives.TheWarringSta
