4、ators(SVCs)areusedextensivelytocontroltheACvoltageintransmissionnetworks.Powerelectronicequipment,suchasthethyristorcontrolledreactor(TCR)andthethyristorswitchedcapacitor(TSC)havegainedasignificantmarket,primarilybecauseofwell-provenrobustnesstosupplydynamicreac
5、tivepowerwithfastresponsetimeandwithlowmaintenance.Withtheadventofhighpowergateturn-offthyristorsandtransistordevices(GTO,IGBT,…)anewgenerationofpowerelectronicequipment,STATCOM,showsgreatpromiseforapplicationinpowersystems[3,4].Thispaperaimstoexplainthebenefits
6、ofSVCsandSTATCOMsforapplicationinutilitypowersystems.InstallationofalargenumberofSVCsandexperiencegainedfromrecentSTATCOMprojectsthroughouttheworldmotivatesustoclarifycertainaspectsofthesedevices.II.BASICDESCRIPTIONThissectionexplainsbrieflythebasicconfiguration
7、ofSVCsandSTATCOMs:A.SVCThecompensatornormallyincludesathyristor-controlledreactor(TCR),thyristor-switchedcapacitors(TSCs)andharmonicfilters.Itmightalsoincludemechanicallyswitchedshuntcapacitors(MSCs),andthenthetermstaticvarsystemisused.Theharmonicfilters(forthe1
