4、pedbyonetradition,ourown,butasithasbeenshapedbyanytraditionwhatsoever.Heisinterestedinthegreatgamutofcustomthatisfoundinvariouscultures,andhisobjectistounderstandthewayinwhichthesecultureschangeanddifferentiate,thedifferentformsthroughwhichtheyexpressthemselve
5、s,andthemannerinwhichthecustomsofanypeoplefunctioninthelivesoftheindividualswhocomposethem.[3]Nowcustomhasnotbeencommonlyregardedasasubjectofanygreatmoment.Theinnerworkingsofourownbrainswefeeltobeuniquelyworthyofinvestigation,butcustom,wehaveawayofthinking,isb
6、ehavioratitsmostcommonplace.Asamatteroffact,itistheotherwayaround.Traditionalcustom,takentheworldover,isamassofdetailedbehaviormoreastonishingthanwhatanyonepersoncaneverevolveinindividualactions,nomatterhowaberrant.Yetthatisarathertrivialaspectofthematter.Thef
