3、cingunit.Andinmany,thoughnotall,instancestheelementofcontrolissogreatthatwhereasmechanizationdisplacesmuscle,“automation”displacesbrainaswell.Thedistinctionbetweenthemechanizationofthepastandwhatishappeningnowis,however,notasharpone.Atoneextremewehavetheelectroniccomputerwithitsquiteremarkablecapa
4、cityfordiscriminationandcontrol,whileattheotherendofthescaleare“transfermachines”,astheyarenowcalled,whichmaybeassimpleasaconveyorbelttoanother.Anautomaticmechanismisonewhichhasacapacityforself-regulation;thatis,itcanregulateorcontrolthesystemorprocesswithouttheneedforconstanthumanattentionoradjus
5、tment.Nowpeopleoftentalkabout“feedback”asbeginanessentialfactorofthenewindustrialtechniques,uponwhichisbaseanautomaticself-regulatingsystemandbyvirtueofwhichanydeviationinthesystemfromdesiredconditioncanbedetected,measured,reportedandcorrected.when“feedback”isappliedtotheprocessbywhichalargedigita
