1、December15,1995DearColleagues,TheInstituteforAdvancedStudywillhaveaspecialprogramduringtheacademicyear1996-97onquantumfieldtheory,directedbyP.Deligne,D.KazhdanandE.Witten.ItwillbesponsoredjointlybytheSchoolofMathematicsandtheSchoolofNaturalSciences.Thegoalistocreateandconveyanun
2、derstanding,intermscongenialtomathematicians,ofsomefundamentalnotionsofphysics,suchasquantumfieldtheory,supersymmetryandstringtheory.Theemphasiswillbeondevelopingtheintuitionstemmingfromfunctionalintegrals.Onewaytodefinethegoalsoftheprogramisbynegation,excludingcertainimportants
3、ubjectscommonlypursuedbymathematicianswhoseworkismotivatedbyphysics.Inthisspirit,itisnotplannedtotreatexceptperiferallythemagnificentnewapplicationsoffieldtheory,suchasSeiberg-WittenequationstoDonaldsontheory.Noristheplantoconsiderfundamentalnewconstructionswithinmathematicsthat
4、wereinspiredbyphysics,suchasquantumgroupsorvertexoperatoralgebras.Noristheaimtodiscusshowtoprovidemathematicalrigorforphysicaltheories.Rather,thegoalistodevelopthesortofintuitioncommonamongphysicistsforthosewhoareusedtothoughtprocessesstemmingfromgeometryandalgebra.Duringtheyear
5、therewillbeseveralseriesoflectures,including:QuantumfieldtheoryincludingYang-Millstheoryandrenormalization,byL.FaddeevConformalfieldtheoriesfromthepointofviewoffunctionalintegrals,byK.GawedzkiSuper-symmetry,byD.KazhdanStringtheoryleadingtoYang-Millstheoryandsuper-symmetry,byE.D'
