3、rangeandtoexhibitovershootandsteady-statetemperatureerroroflessthan1degreeKelvinintheactualchambertemperaturestepresponse.Thedetailsofthedesigndevelopedbythisgroupofstudents,basedonaMotorolaMC68HC05familymicrocontroller,aredescribed.Thepedagogicalvalueo

4、ftheproblemisalsodiscussedthroughadescriptionofsomeofthekeystepsinthedesignprocess.Itisshownthatthesolutionrequiresbroadknowledgedrawnfromseveralengineeringdisciplinesincludingelectrical,mechanical,andcontrolsystemsengineering.1IntroductionThedesignproj

5、ectwhichisthesubjectofthispaperoriginatedfromareal-worldapplication.AprototypeofamicroscopeslidedryerhadbeendevelopedaroundanOmegaTMmodelCN-390temperaturecontroller,andtheobjectivewastodevelopacustomtemperaturecontrolsystemtoreplacetheOmegasystem.Themot

6、ivationwasthatacustomcontrollertargetedspecificallyfortheapplicationshouldbeabletoachievethesamefunctionalityatamuchlowercost,astheOmegasystemisunnecessarilyversatileandequippedtohandleawidevarietyofapplications.Themechanicallayoutoftheslidedryerprototy

7、peisshowninFigure1.Themainelementofthedryerisalarge,insulated,air-filledchamberinwhichmicroscopeslides,eachwithatissuesampleencasedinparaffin,canbesetoncaddies.Inorderthattheparaffinmaintaintheproperconsistency,thetemperatureintheslidechambermustbemaint

8、ainedatadesired(constant)temperature.Asecondchamber(theelectronicsenclosure)housesaresistiveheaterandthetemperaturecontroller,andafanmountedontheendofthedryerblowsairacrosstheheater,carryingheatintotheslidechamber.Thisdesignproje
