6、8世纪末、19世纪初产业革命的推动下出现的。之后在产业革命的推动下得到迅速发展。作为一种大众化的信托投资工具，各国对证券投资基金的称谓不尽相同，如美国称“共同基金”，英国和我国香港地区称“单位信托基金”，日本和我国台湾地区则称“证券投资信托基金”等。证券投资基金在我国发展的时间还比较短，但在证券监管机构的扶植下，在短短几年时间里获得了突飞猛进的发展。2004年6月1日，我国《证券投资基金法》正式实施，成为中国证券投资基金业发展史上得一个重要里程碑。证券投资基金业从此进入崭新的发展阶段，基金数量和规模迅速增长，市场地位日趋重要。
