2、ledtoreceivedueattentioninthepast.Thepresentstudy,basedonQian(1999)’sframeworkofvocabularyknowledge,attemptstoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenbreadthanddepthofvocabularyknowledgeandreadingcomprehensioninESLforjuniorhighschoolstudents.Inthestudy,72second-yearjuniorhighschoolstudentsar
3、econsideredasparticipantsofthestudy.Theywererequiredtodotwoteststomeasuretheirvocabularysizeanddepthofvocabularyknowledgerespectively.Theirscoresofreadingcomprehensioninthepastweekwerealsodocumentedfortherepresentationoftheirreadingproficiency.Withinoneweek’sdatacollection,therawdataw
4、ereanalyzedwithPearsoncorrelationandmultipleregressionasdominantstatisticaltechniques.Afterthat,theanalyseswereconductedwithSPSS13.0withfurtherdiscussionmadeandconclusiondrawn.Theresultofthestudyshowedthatthecorrelationamongthescoresofthethreetestswerehighlyandpositivelyassociatedande
5、speciallyscoresondepthofvocabularyknowledgemadeanotablecontributiontothepredictionofreadingcomprehension.Basedontheempiricalevidence,conclusioncouldbedrawnthatreadingproficiencyisaffectedmorebydepthofvocabularyknowledgethanbyvocabularysizeandthetwodimensionsofvocabularyknowledgearestr
6、onglyassociated.Thisindicatesthatvocabularyacquisitionismorethanmerememorizationofaword’sformandmeaning,butrather,itisacomplexprocessofcomprehendingallaspectsofvocabularyknowledge.Thisstudyisinstructivetovocabularyacquisitioninthewaythatitlaysaempiricalfoundationforlearner’srecognitio
