2、getextinthecourseoftranslatingitintotargetlanguagetext.Thecomparisonoftextsindifferentlanguagesinevitablyinvolvesatheoryofequivalence.Equivalencecanbesaidtobethecentralissueintranslationalthoughitsdefinition,relevance,andapplicabilitywithinthefieldoftranslationtheoryhavecausedheatedco
3、ntroversy,andmanydifferenttheoriesoftheconceptofequivalencehavebeenelaboratedwithinthisfieldinthepastfiftyyears.Theaimofthispaperisfirsttoreviewthetheoryofequivalenceasinterpretedbysomeofthemostinnovativetheoristsinthisfield—VinayandDarbelnet,Jakobson,NidaandTaber,Catford,House,andfin
4、allyBaker.Thesetheoristshavestudiedequivalenceinrelationtothetranslationprocess,usingdifferentapproaches,andhaveprovidedfruitfulideasforfurtherstudyonthistopic.VinayandDarbelnetandtheirdefinitionofequivalenceintranslationVinayandDarbelnetviewequivalence-orientedtranslationasaprocedure
5、which“replicatesthesamesituationasintheoriginal,whilstusingcompletelydifferentwording”.Theyalsosuggestthat,ifthisprocedureisappliedduringthetranslationprocess,itcanmaintainthestylisticimpactoftheSLtextintheTLtext.Accordingtothem,equivalenceisthereforetheidealmethodwhenthetranslatorhas
6、todealwithproverbs,idioms,clichés,nominaloradjectivalphrasesandtheonomatopoeiaofanimalsounds.Withregardtoequivalentexpressionsbetweenlanguagepairs,VinayandDarbelnetclaimthattheyareacceptableaslongastheyarelistedinabilingualdictionaryas“fullequivalents”.However,latertheynotethatglossar
7、iesandcollectionsofidiomaticexpressions“canneverbeexhaustive”.Theyconcludebysayingthat“theneedforcreatingequivalencesarisesfromthesituation,anditisinthesituationoftheSLtextthattranslatorshavetolookforasolution”.Indeed,theyarguethatevenifthesemanticequivalentofanexpressionintheSLtextis
