2、himinmanyothercases.Histranslation(ZoneBooks,1994)andtheearlieronebyFredyPerlmanandJohnSupak(BlackandRed,1977)arebothinprint,andbothcanalsobefoundattheSituationistInternationalOnlinewebsite(http://situationist.cjb.net).IbelievethatmytranslationconveysDebord’sactualmeaningmoreaccurately,a
3、swellasmoreclearlyandidiomatically,thananyoftheotherversions.Iamneverthelessawarethatitisfarfromperfect,andwelcomeanycriticismsorsuggestions.Ifyoufindtheopeningchapterstoodifficult,youmighttrystartingwithChapter4orChapter5.AsyouseehowDeborddealswithconcretehistoricalevents,youmaygetabett
4、erideaofthepracticalimplicationsofideasthatarepresentedmoreabstractlyintheotherchapters.Thebookisnot,however,asdifficultorabstractasitisreputedtobe.Itisnotanivory-toweracademicorphilosophicaldiscourse.ItisanefforttoclarifythenatureofthesocietyinwhichweTheSocietyoftheSpectaclefindourselve
5、sandtheadvantagesanddrawbacksofvariousmethodsforchangingit.Everysinglethesishasadirectorindirectbearingonissuesthataremattersoflifeanddeath.Chapter4,whichwithremarkableconcisenesssumsupthelessonsoftwocenturiesofrevolutionaryexperience,issimplythemostobviousexample.—KenKnabbFebruary2002by
