2、axialapparatusisintroducedinthispaper.Thebasicprincipleofthemeasuringsystemistorecordchangesinthedifferentialpressureduetochangesinthewaterlevelinsideanopen-ended,bottle-shapedinnercellcausedbyvolumechangeinthespecimenandinsideareferencetubeusinganaccuratediff

3、erentialpressuretransducer.Severalimportantstepsweretakentoimprovetheaccuracyandsensitivityofthemeasuringsystem.Detailedcalibrationswerecarriedouttoaccountforapparentvolumechangesasaresultofchangesincellpressure,fluctuationintheambienttemperatures,creepinthein

4、nercellwall,andrelativemovementbetweentheloadingramandtheinnercell.Thecalibrationresultsdemonstratethatthemeasuringsystemisreasonablylinear,reversible,andrepeatable.Theestimatedaccuracyofthemeasuringsystemisintheorderof32mm3(or0.04%volumetricstrainforatriaxial
