5、iscussseveralproblemsinthestatisticalmechanicsoftwodimensionalrandomsurfacesandmembranes.Asanintroduction,Ipresentsomebasicfactsaboutthestatisticalmechanicsofone-dimensionalobjectsandpolymers,whichareclassicalexamplesofobjectswithcriticalproperties.ThenIemphasizethespecialrole
6、ofcurvatureenergyandoftheelasticenergyassoci-atedwiththeinternalstructureofmembranes,andthecorrespondingmodelsofrandomsurfaces.Finally,Idiscussthespecificproblemofself-avoidingtetheredsurfaces,whosecriticalpropertiesarestillpoorlyunderstood,andforwhichtheapplicabilityofsomebas
