2、sdonot,however,takeintoaccounttheactualoccurrenceoftheseverbs.Thearticlepresentsanewcorpus-basedlearninglist,inwhichtheverbsarerankedintheirorderoffrequencyinauthenticEnglish.Thenewlistensuresthatthelearnerhasencounteredthemostimportantverbs,nomatterwhenthelearningprocessends.Fo

3、rtheauthorofteachingmaterialsandtheteacher,thenewlistsuppliesanempiricalbasisfortheselectionandgradationofirregularverbsinlanguagecourses.11.ProblemandgoalIrregularverbshauntlearnersofEnglishfromthebeginningtotheendoftheirstudies.Fullmasteryofirregularverbsseemstobeveryrarelyach

4、ieved.ThereareveryfewverblesssentencesinEnglishandirregularverbsbelongtothecoreofEnglish.Inalltypesoftexts,formsofirregularverbsoutnumberthoseofregularverbs.Thelearningofirregularverbsisnormallybasedonthewell-knownalphabeticallistswhichrangefromABIDEtoWRITE(Quirketal.1985:115ff.

5、),fromARISEtoWRITE(CollinsCOBUILDEnglishGrammar1990:451)orfromBEtoWRITE(Ungereretal.1989:Iff.).Alltheselistsdifferinthenumberofverbs.Unfortunately,thegrammarsmakenomentionofthebasisonwhichtheselistswerecompiled.Thelistsareprobablybasedonacomparisonofpreviouslistsandtheexperience

6、and/orintuitionoftheauthor(s)ofagrammar.Alphabeticallistsofirregularverbsareappropriateforlookingup5EvaGrabowskiandDieterMindtverbforms.Theorderofverbsinalphabeticallistsis,however,ofnoavailinthelearningoftheseverbs,becausetheirorderdoesnotreflecttheirimportanceinlanguageuse.Thi

7、sarticleaimsatestablishinganewlearninglistofirregularverbs,aranklistinwhichtheverbsareorderedaccordingtotheirfrequencyinEnglish.Learnerswhousethislistwillbeabletolearnthemostimportantverbsfirstandtheleastimportantoneslast.Iflearningisdiscontinued,thelearnercanbesuretohaveencount
