4、bouthouseholdsizehasbeenmadeinthelastfewdecadesaboutwidelydifferentsocieties,namelypartsofEuropeinpreindustrialtimes,India,andChina.UntilrecentlyitwaswidelybelievedthatinpreindustrialEurope,aswellasinIndiaandChina,largehouseholdsusedtobethenorm.Thediscoverythattheaveragehouseholdsizewasont
5、heorderofonlyfivepersons,therefore,cameasasurprise.ThetraditionalhouseholdformationsystemsofIndiaandChinaaresim-ilartoeachother(atleastintheaspectsdealtwithinthispaper).ButthehouseholdformationsystemsofNorthwestEuropeintheseventeenthandeighteenthcenturieswereverydifferent,thoughtheyyielded
6、householdsofroughlythesamesize.Theaimofthispaperistodescribeandcontrasttwokindsofhouseholdformationsystemsinquantitativeterms.Theterm"house-holdformationsystem"isusedtoindicatethattheintentionistocomparemodesofbehaviorthatresultintheformationofhouseholdsofvariouskinds,aswellastocomparether
7、esultsofthatbehavior.Ahouseholdformationsystemisdefinedbyhouseholdformationrules,asdescribedinsection1.Despitegapsintheevidence,enoughdatahavenowbeenaccumulatedbyhistorianstosupportstronglytheconclusionthatthehouseholdformationsystemsofallpopulationsinpreindus
