3、ce:America,whichstoodasabeaconoffreedomandopportunitytosomanywhohadcomebefore.Whilestudyinghere,myfathermetmymother.Shewasborninatownontheothersideoftheworld,inKansas.HerfatherworkedonoilrigsandfarmsthroughmostoftheDepression.ThedayafterPearlHarborhesignedupforduty,joinedPatton'sarmyandmarchedacross
4、Europe.Backhome,mygrandmotherraisedtheirbabyandwenttoworkonabomberassemblyline.Afterthewar,theystudiedontheGIBill,boughtahousethroughFHA,andmovedwestinsearchofopportunity.Andthey,too,hadbigdreamsfortheirdaughter,acommondream,bornoftwocontinents.Myparentssharednotonlyanimprobablelove;theysharedanabid
5、ingfaithinthepossibilitiesofthisnation.TheywouldgivemeanAfricanname,Barack,or"blessed,"believingthatinatolerantAmericayournameisnobarriertosuccess.Theyimaginedmegoingtothebestschoolsintheland,eventhoughtheyweren'trich,becauseinagenerousAmericayoudon'thavetoberichtoachieveyourpotential.Theyarebothpas
6、sedawaynow.Yet,Iknowthat,onthisnight,theylookdownonmewithpride.Istandheretoday,gratefulforthediversityofmyheritage,awarethatmyparents'dreamsliveoninmypreciousdaughters.IstandhereknowingthatmystoryispartofthelargerAmericanstory,thatIoweadebttoallofthosewhocamebeforeme,andthat,innoothercountryonearth,
7、ismystoryevenpossible.Tonight,wegathertoaffirmthegreatnessofournation,notbecauseoftheheightofourskyscrapers,orthepowerofourmilitary,orthesizeofoureconomy.Ourprideisbasedonaverysimplepremise,summedupin
