3、usingontherelationshipbetweensupplychainmanagementandthird-partylogisticsservicestrategieshasgainedlittleattention.Thispaperfocusesonalternativesupplychainstrategiesandtheirrelationshiptodifferenttypesofthird-partylogisticsservices.Anormativeframeworkfororganizingtheserelationshipsisd

4、eveloped.Thestrategicviewadoptedinthispaperfillsagapintheunderstandingofhowthird-partylogisticsprovidersshouldoffertheirservicesmoreeffectivelyandefficientlytodifferenttypesofsupplychains.IntroductionMarketingreasonsforThereareverygoodmarketingreasonsforwhyweshouldfocusonresearchresea

5、rchintothird-partylogisticsservicesandtheirrelationtosupplychainmanagement.First,theoutsourcingoflogisticsservicesisexpectedtoincrease(Ohmae,1989;Coyleetal.,1992).ItwillcontinuetoevolveatleastinEurope(Petersetal.,1998)andUSA.ThemajorityofCEOsoflargelogisticsserviceprovidersinEuropebel

6、ieved(Petersetal.,1998)thattheannualindustrygrowthrateovertheperiod1998-2000wouldbearound20percent.WithregardtotheUSA,theestimatedsalesgrowthwasfrom$15billion(1996)to$50billionbytheyear2000,ayearlygrowthofashighas40percentofthemarketwithinaperiodofthreeyears.Second,thethird-partylogis

7、tics(TPL)industryisayoungandemergingindustry(Kuglin,1998,p.227;Sinketal.,1996;SinkandLangley,1997)whichpromisesapositivefutureforthelogisticsindustry.Third,thescopeofservicesthatthird-partylogisticsprovidersareofferingisexpanding,andTPLprovidersareaggressivelyimprovingtheiroperations.
