2、theticsofSportTeresaLacerdaandStephenMumfordThispapercontainsaconsiderationofthenotionofgeniusanditssignificancetothediscussionoftheaestheticsofsport.Wearguethatgeniuscanmakeapositiveaestheticcontributioninbothartandsport,justassomehavearguedthatthemoralcontentofaworkofartcanaffectitsaesthetic
3、value.Ageniusisanexceptionalinnovatorofsuccessfulstrategies,wheresuchoriginalityaddsaestheticvalue.Wearguethatanoriginalpaintingcanhavegreateraestheticvaluethananexactreplica,merelybecauseitistheoriginal.Byparityofreasoning,asuccessfulinnovationinsporthasadditionalaestheticvaluejustbecauseitis
4、anewcreation.Thegeniusisonewhocanprovidethisextraaestheticpleasureandonthatbasisisrightlyvalued.Thegeniusneednotbeconsciousofhowtheyachievesuchinnovationsandthusfindtheirowngeniustobesomethingtheycannotexplainbutonlydemonstrate.Insport,innovationsthatoffernewwaysofplayingorsolvingproblemscanpr
5、oducecompetitivesuccesswhichdemandsinstantrecognitionandrewards.ThePortuguesepoetFernandoPessoa(1888–1935)saidthatwhatthegeniuscanexpectfromtheircontemporariesistobedespised,and“Ineverycase,thenoblerthegeniusthelessnoblethefate”(17:p.202).AlthoughsocietyhaschangedmuchsincePessoawrotethis,andso
6、meartistsnowalsohavecelebritystatus,thereisstillatleastsometruthinhisidea.ButwhatPessoasaidfitsmuchbetterwiththegeniusinartthanwithsportforinsportthegeniuscanexpectinstantfameandadulation.Intheartworld,incontrast,recognitionofgeniustendstobearetrospective,evenaposthumousassessment.Ingeneral,th
7、econceptofageniushasfallenoutofuseincontemporaryphilosophyofartthougholderthinkersdidhavesomethingtosayaboutit.Insports,however,thenotionofgeniusisstillusedandarguablyover-used.Inthispaper,weintendtotakethenotionofgeniusphilosophicallys
