2、dcooperationhehasshownthroughoutthistransition. Forty-fourAmericanshavenowtakenthepresidentialoath.Thewordshavebeenspokenduringrisingtidesofprosperityandthestillwatersofpeace.Yet,everysooftentheoathistakenamidstgatheringcloudsandragingstorms.Atthese
3、moments,Americahascarriedonnotsimplybecauseoftheskillorvisionofthoseinhighoffice,butbecauseWethePeoplehaveremainedfaithfultotheidealsofourforbearers,andtruetoourfoundingdocuments. Soithasbeen.SoitmustbewiththisgenerationofAmericans. Thatweareinthem
4、idstofcrisisisnowwellunderstood.Ournationisatwar,againstafar-reachingnetworkofviolenceandhatred.Oureconomyisbadlyweakened,aconsequenceofgreedandirresponsibilityonthepartofsome,butalsoourcollectivefailuretomakehardchoicesandpreparethenationforanewage.
5、Homeshavebeenlost;jobsshed;businessesshuttered.Ourhealthcareistoocostly;ourschoolsfailtoomany;andeachdaybringsfurtherevidencethatthewaysweuseenergystrengthenouradversariesandthreatenourplanet. Thesearetheindicatorsofcrisis,subjecttodataandstatistics
6、.Lessmeasurablebutnolessprofoundisasappingofconfidenceacrossourland-anaggingfearthatAmerica’sdeclineisinevitable,andthatthenextgenerationmustloweritssights. TodayIsaytoyouthatthechallengeswefacearereal.Theyareseriousandtheyaremany.Theywillnotbemetea
7、silyorinashortspanoftime.Butknowthis,America-theywillbemet. Onthisday,wegatherbecausewehavechosenhopeoverfear,unityofpurposeoverconflictanddiscord. Onthisday,wecometoproclaimanendtothepettygrievancesandfalsepromises,therecriminationsandwornoutdogma
