1、WalterScottI.AnOverviewSir WalterScott,1stBaronet(15August1771---21September1832)wasaScottishhistoricalnovelist,playwright,andpoet,popularthroughoutmuchoftheworldduringhistime.ScottwasthefirstEnglish-languageauthortohaveatrulyinternationalcareerinhislifetime, withmanycontemporaryreadersinEu

2、rope,Australia,andNorthAmerica.Hisnovelsandpoetryarestillread,andmanyofhisworksremainclassicsofbothEnglish-languageliteratureandof Scottishliterature.FamoustitlesincludeIvanhoe, RobRoy, TheLadyoftheLake, Waverley, TheHeartofMidlothian and TheBrideofLammermoor.II.LifeExperienceBorninCollegeW

3、ynd inthe OldTown of Edinburgh in1771,thesonofasolicitor,Scottsurvivedachildhoodboutof polio in1773thatlefthimlame.Tocurehislamenesshewassentin1773toliveathispaternalgrandparents'farm. HerehewastaughttoreadbyhisauntJenny,andlearnedfromherthespeechpatternsandmanyofthetalesandlegendsthatchara

4、cterisedmuchofhiswork.Scottbeganstudyingclassicsatthe UniversityofEdinburgh inNovember1783,attheageofonly12,ayearorsoyoungerthanmostofhisfellowstudents.InMarch1786hebegananapprenticeshipinhisfather'sofficetobecomeaWritertotheSignet.Scottmettheblindpoet ThomasBlacklock wholenthimbooksaswella

5、sintroducinghimto JamesMacpherson's Ossian cycleofpoems.Duringthewinterof1786–87the15-year-oldScottsawRobertBurns atoneofthesesalons,forwhatwastobetheironlymeeting.Aftercompletinghisstudiesinlaw,hebecamealawyerinEdinburgh.Hehadanunsuccessfullovesuitwithawoman,whomarriedScott´sfriendSir Will

6、iamForbes,6thBaronet.In1813,ScottwasofferedthepositionofPoetLaureate.Hedeclined,andthepositionwenttoRobertSouthey.In1825and1826,abankingcrisissweptthroughthecitiesofLondonandEdinburgh.TheBallantineprintingbusiness,inwhichhewasheavilyinvested,crashed,resultinginhisbeingverypubliclyruined.Hep

7、lacedhishouseandincomeinatrustbelongingtohiscreditors,anddeterminedtowritehiswayoutofdebt.Hekeptuphisprodigiousoutputoffiction,aswellasproducingabiographyof NapoleonBonaparte,until1831.Bythenhishealthwasfailing.Notwithstandingthis,heundertookagrandtourof
