4、eadyacquiredalargeamountofequipmentandisconstantlytryingtodevelopitsfacilitiesinseveraldirections.Rapidadvancementhasbeenachievedinthefieldofstoneconservation,buttherearestillmanyunsolvedproblems.Withthisbackground,thepresentConsultantwasaskedbyUNDPtocometoLucknowandworkattheNRLC

5、withthefollowingaimsinmind:(i)SettingupaStoneLaboratory;(ii)OrganizingatrainingcourseforNRLCtechnicalstaff.2.Onarrival,theprogrammewasdiscussedwithMr.O.P.Agrawal,HeadoftheNRLC,whilebearinginmindimmediateobjectivesandthoseoflong-termprogrammes.Fortunately,Dr.(Mrs.)PaolaRossi-Doria

6、ofCNRwaspresentatNRLCatthattime.Shehasconsiderableexperienceinthestudyofvariouspropertiesofstoneanditsdeteriorationprocesses.TheConsultantwasabletodrawupwithheranextensivetrainingprogramme.II.DEVELOPMENTOFTHEMISSION3.Thetrainingcourseconsistedmainlyoflectures,visitstomonumentsand

7、discussionsonspecialconservationproblems.4.Thelectureswereoftwokinds;generallecturesanddetailedlectures.11.1GenerallecturesweregiventoalargenumberofpersonsoftheNRLConthefollowingtopics:(a)Pétrographie,chemicalandphysicalcharacteristicsofstonematerials;(b)chemicalandphysicalstudyo
